At $6+ Diesel Prices, Someone's Going to Flip Your Reefer to Cycle Mode

stop load chasing

In November 2017, a trucker named Godoy hauled 2,025 cases of Halo Top ice cream to a Walmart for $600. The rate con said -20°F, continuous, meaning the engine runs the whole trip and so do the fans. But his unit was set to -19°F on cycle, the fuel saver that shuts the engine off at setpoint until the box warms.

You can probably guess where this is going. The engine shut off before the truck got to the dock, Walmart refused the melting load, and six years and an appeals court later, Godoy wound up owing $41,030… plus $66,165.76 to cover the broker’s lawyers.

Now, Godoy made that run when diesel prices averaged $2.88 a gallon. But we’re in a much different world these days. Diesel prices hit a record $6.529 in September, per EIA, and are still above $6, making cycle mode worth about $22 a trailer a day to whoever buys the fuel. But of course, that's rarely whoever owns the freight… meaning YOU.

So it’s safe to assume that somebody's going to flip your reefer to cycle mode while diesel prices sit above $6, and to also assume the BOL will say “continuous” for the entire trip. How does that happen? What’s it worth? Why can’t produce and pharma take it? And how can you catch it while the truck's still moving?

Does High Diesel Increase Reefer Temperature Excursions?

Not by itself, but it tilts the odds. A spike in diesel prices makes every fuel-saving shortcut worth more money, and on a load that needs continuous airflow, those shortcuts are where excursions come from.

Keep an eye out for the following shortcuts:

  1. The driver switches the unit to cycle
  2. Somebody nudges the setpoint a degree or two warmer
  3. Precool gets skipped
  4. The unit gets shut off at a dock

Godoy’s load had two of those shortcuts in place going before anyone touched the off switch, and none of it showed up on paper.

How Much is Cycle Mode Worth at Today's Diesel Prices?

About $22 a trailer a day. A produce reefer at 34°F burns roughly 0.5 gallons an hour on continuous and 0.35 on cycle. An analysis FreightWaves reported put the savings closer to 40%, making the table below relatively conservative.

That's about 70% more than a year ago, and even tax-exempt dyed diesel in the reefer tank leaves it close to $20 a day.

Part of that incentive comes from how the freight is priced. Most fuel surcharges pay by the mile off EIA's weekly index, but a reefer burns by the hour, including the 10 hours a driver has to park each day and every hour he waits at a dock. A per-mile carrier eats those hours, and cycle mode then claws some back.

Don't count on prices to fix this, either. EIA finalized its October outlook on October 1 with diesel above $4 through 2027, the same week tanker attacks in Hormuz hit a wartime high. In the weeks prior, the Houthis also seized Perim Island at the mouth of the Red Sea, and Ukrainian drones had cut output at three of Russia's six biggest diesel refineries.

Why Do Produce and Pharma Loads Need Continuous Mode?

Because both need moving air, and on most trailer units the evaporator fans stop whenever the engine does.

Fresh produce is still alive in the truck, regardless. It keeps respiring, which throws off heat, and asparagus does it far faster than apples or potatoes. With the fans off, that heat has nowhere to go, so the middle of a pallet creeps warmer while the sensor up front still reads near setpoint.

USDA's truck transport handbook, in a UF/IFAS revision co-written by a Thermo King specialist, says not to use start-stop on fresh produce, and Blue Book's transportation guidelines agree.

Pharma has even less room. A 2-8°C product gets 6 degrees; EU GDP expects it to stay inside them the whole trip, and if QA qualified the lane with the unit on continuous, a cycling unit isn't the system they approved. Telling an inspector nothing went over 8°C won't end that conversation.

How Can You Tell if a Reefer Was Switched to Cycle Mode?

Look at the temperature line.

Continuous mode holds a steady trace right at the setpoint, with only small wiggles. Cycle mode leaves a much more recognizable fingerprint: a sawtooth pattern as the reefer shuts off, the trailer warms, and the unit kicks back on. Yet the temperature may never cross your alarm threshold, even while that pattern repeats for hours.

Only two sources can show you what happened though, and just one answers to you.

First, the reefer's own logger records the mode outright, which sank Godoy. The download belongs to the carrier and surfaces mid-claim. FSMA’s sanitary transportation rule doesn’t change that.

The other is a tracker you add to the load, providing the only source you can act on with real-time shipment visibility as the truck is moving. Take Alpine Fresh’s story: it had a Tive tracker in a $90,000 asparagus load headed to Miami when the temperature started swinging. The reefer was on cycle, and Tive’s monitoring team caught it in time.

At Tive, we’re taking this capability up a notch now, too, with Smart Reefer Cycle Detection Alerts.

What Should Shippers Tighten When Diesel Prices Spike?

Setpoint and mode, the two settings a fuel spike quietly loosens. Nobody checks either until a load comes off warm.

  1. Write “continuous” into the contract: TQL's carrier agreement banned any "non-continuous temperature setting" without written approval, and the court held Godoy to it. Put that clause in your rate cons.
  2. Ride your own tracker in the load: It’s the only temperature record a carrier can’t withhold, and it gives you your own real-time location history if cargo theft becomes the problem instead. Pharma benefits greatly from a validated, calibrated Tive Solo Pro, for instance.
  3. Decide who calls the driver: An alert nobody's watching is completely worthless. Workflow Automations can text carrier dispatch when temps drift toward a limit.
  4. Pay for continuous where it matters: At today's diesel prices, the extra fuel is about $22 a day, which kills the carrier's reason to cycle. Godoy's load was worth $42,930.
  5. Refuse loads whose temperature trace shows a sawtooth pattern- even when the customer is waiting: U.K. MHRA inspectors say the usual reason an excursion load gets accepted is "purely commercial." Decide what gets refused before the truck arrives.

Check the Mode Before the Pallets Come Off Warm

Godoy's reefer knew it was on cycle and knew the minute it shut off, and that data informed a courtroom six years later. Alpine Fresh's reefer was on cycle, too, and a Tive tracker in the load told Alpine while the asparagus was still cold. Same problem, different witness. With diesel prices above $6, cycle mode is worth about $22 a day to somebody who doesn't own your freight, and the BOL will say continuous either way.

Tive is the witness that works for you. A real-time tracking device rides inside the load and reports temperature, humidity, light, shock, and location in real time. Smart Reefer Cycle Detection spots the sawtooth before any threshold trips, and if you opt for it, Tive's 24/7 Monitoring team steps in while the unit can still be switched back.

Everything lands in Tive's cold chain monitoring platform, timestamped, so the next time a receiver or regulator asks what happened in the trailer, the answer is in your hands.

Get started with Tive, and find out what mode your reefers are really running.
